June 15, 2026 - Psalm 23

Devotional: Monday, June 15, 2026 — Psalm 23

Theme: The Shepherd's Presence

David does not begin Psalm 23 by describing his circumstances. He begins by describing his Shepherd.

That distinction matters.

When uncertainty enters our lives, our attention naturally shifts toward what we cannot control. We begin asking questions about the future. We wonder what comes next. We look for guarantees that everything will work out exactly as we hope.

Yet Psalm 23 begins somewhere else.

"The Lord is my shepherd."

Before David speaks about green pastures, still waters, dark valleys, or overflowing cups, he anchors himself in the character of God.

The image of a shepherd would have been deeply familiar in the ancient world. A shepherd guided, protected, fed, and remained with the flock. The sheep's confidence was not found in knowing the path ahead but in knowing the one leading them.

That remains true for God's people today.

As our congregation continues through a season of transition, Psalm 23 reminds us that our ultimate security has never rested in human leadership, familiar routines, or certainty about the future. Our confidence rests in the presence of the One who continues to shepherd His Church.

The promise of Psalm 23 is not that life will be free from difficulty. In fact, David later speaks openly about walking through the valley of the shadow of death. The promise is that wherever the path leads, the Shepherd goes with His people.

Many of us would prefer a map.

God often offers His presence instead.

And throughout Scripture, His presence has proven sufficient.

Reflection Questions

  • Where do you most desire certainty right now?
  • How might God be inviting you to trust His presence instead?
  • What does it mean to say, "The Lord is my shepherd"?

Prayer

Good Shepherd, when the future feels uncertain, remind us that you remain faithful. Teach us to trust your presence more than our plans and your guidance more than our understanding. Lead us beside still waters and restore our souls. Amen.
