Devotional: Tuesday, June 23 — Psalm 27:13–14 (ESV)
Theme: Waiting with Courage
"I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!"
Waiting can be discouraging.
We pray for healing, but the diagnosis remains unchanged. We seek direction, but the path ahead is still unclear. We hope for reconciliation, provision, or answers, yet the season stretches on longer than we expected.
It is often in those moments that doubts begin to whisper. Has God forgotten? Is He listening? Will anything ever change? David understood those questions.
Psalm 27 is not written from a place of comfort and ease. Throughout the psalm, David speaks of enemies, fear, opposition, and uncertainty. Yet as he reaches the end, he makes a remarkable declaration: "I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!"
Notice what David does not say.
He does not say he understands everything God is doing.
He does not say he knows how or when God will act.
Instead, he declares his confidence in God's goodness.
Biblical hope is not optimism. It is not wishful thinking. It is confidence rooted in the character of God.
David's courage came from remembering who God is.
Because God is faithful, David could wait.
Because God is good, David could trust.
Because God had been present before, David believed God would be present again.
That is why David gives the same instruction twice: "Wait for the Lord."
The repetition matters because waiting is rarely a single decision. It is a daily act of trust.
Every day we choose whether discouragement will have the final word.
Every day we choose whether fear will shape our outlook.
Every day we choose whether we will continue believing that God is at work even when we cannot yet see the outcome.
Waiting is not passive resignation.
It is active faith.
It is choosing to trust God's promises while standing in the tension between what is and what has not yet come to pass.
As we continue through this week, remember that courage is not the absence of uncertainty. Courage is trusting God in the midst of it.
And often, the greatest evidence of faith is not moving ahead quickly. It is remaining steadfast while we wait.
Reflection Questions
- What situation in your life requires courage to continue trusting God?
- How have you experienced God's goodness in previous seasons of waiting?
- What would it look like to wait with confidence rather than discouragement this week?
Prayer
Faithful God, thank you for your goodness that never changes. When we grow weary in waiting, strengthen our hearts and renew our trust in you. Help us to believe that we will see your goodness and to wait with courage, confidence, and hope. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
