Working for the Lord
Scripture
Colossians 3:23–24 (ESV)
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."
— Colossians 3:23–24 (ESV)
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
There is a quiet temptation that often creeps into our service.
If no one notices…
If no one says thank you…
If no one recognizes our effort…
We begin to wonder if what we're doing really matters. Paul reminds us that the value of our work is not determined by the applause of people, but by the One for whom we are serving.
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men."
That word whatever is significant. It includes the visible and the invisible.
The sermon preached and the chair set up. The song sung and the meal prepared. The Bible lesson taught and the quiet prayer offered. The phone call, the visit, the encouragement, the act of generosity that no one else ever sees.
Every act of faithful service becomes an act of worship when it is offered to Christ. This truth changes the way we approach every responsibility. Instead of asking, "Will anyone notice?" we begin asking, "Does this honor the Lord?"
Instead of seeking recognition, we pursue faithfulness. Instead of comparing our assignment to someone else's, we simply steward what God has entrusted to us.
Paul reminds us that our reward ultimately comes from the Lord.
That doesn't mean our work always feels easy. There will be days when ministry is exhausting. There will be seasons when serving feels unnoticed. There will be moments when obedience requires sacrifice. But our motivation is greater than praise from others.
We serve because Christ first served us.
As a church, this is especially important during seasons of transition. The work of the Kingdom does not depend on titles or positions. Every member of the body has a role to play. Whether your service is public or behind the scenes, it matters because it is offered to the Lord.
Today, remember this:
You are not simply working for a church.
You are not simply helping a ministry.
You are serving the Lord Christ.
And He sees every faithful act.
Reflection Questions
- How would your attitude toward serving change if you remembered that you are ultimately serving Christ?
- Are there areas where you have been seeking the approval of people more than the approval of God?
- What opportunity do you have today to serve the Lord wholeheartedly?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for the privilege of serving you. Forgive us when we become discouraged by a lack of recognition or distracted by the opinions of others. Help us to work wholeheartedly in every task, knowing that we are serving you. May our lives reflect joyful obedience, faithful stewardship, and a desire to honor you in all we do. In your holy name we pray, Amen.
