Everything in Its Time

Scripture

Ecclesiastes 3:1–11 (ESV)

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven."
— Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV)

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Life rarely unfolds according to our schedules. We make plans, set goals, and pray for answers, expecting God to move within the timelines that make sense to us. Yet, more often than not, we find ourselves waiting.

Waiting for healing.

Waiting for direction.

Waiting for change.

Waiting for God to open the next door.

The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us that every season has its place within God's sovereign plan. "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." Notice that Scripture does not say everything happens by chance.

It says there is a time.

A time to plant.

A time to harvest.

A time to weep.

A time to laugh.

A time to embrace.

A time to let go.

Life is made up of seasons, and each season serves a purpose that only God fully understands. One of the greatest temptations during seasons of waiting is believing that nothing is happening. But God's silence is not His absence. His delay is not His neglect.

Often, the work we cannot see is the work that matters most. A seed buried beneath the soil appears inactive, yet beneath the surface it is developing roots strong enough to sustain future growth. In much the same way, God often does His deepest work within us before He does His greatest work through us. That truth is especially important for a church walking through transition.

It is natural to wonder, "How much longer?"

But perhaps a better question is, "What is God preparing us for?"

While God prepares the next shepherd, He is also preparing the congregation. He is deepening faith. Strengthening relationships. Teaching patience.

Refining priorities. Growing trust. No season is wasted when it is surrendered to God. The chapter concludes with one of the most beautiful statements in Scripture: "He has made everything beautiful in its time."

Not always in our time.

Not always according to our expectations.

But in His time.

God's timing is never rushed.

It is never late.

It is always purposeful.

Today, if you find yourself waiting, remember this: The God who created time is never controlled by it. He is already present in tomorrow while faithfully walking with you today. Trust His timing. He is making something beautiful, even if you cannot yet see it.

Reflection Questions

  1. What season are you currently walking through, and how has it shaped your faith?
  2. Where are you tempted to rush God's timing instead of trusting His wisdom?
  3. How might God be preparing you during this season of waiting?

Prayer

Faithful God, thank you that every season of life is held in your hands. When we become impatient or discouraged, remind us that your timing is always perfect. Help us to trust that you are working even when we cannot yet see the results. Form our hearts, strengthen our faith, and teach us to rest confidently in your wisdom. Make us a people who wait with hope, knowing that you make everything beautiful in your time. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
