The Lord Is Not Slow
Scripture
2 Peter 3:8–9 (ESV)
"But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you..."
— 2 Peter 3:8–9 (ESV)
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Have you ever wondered why God seems to take so long?
We pray for answers, wait for breakthroughs, and long for God to act. From our perspective, His timing can feel slow. It's easy to wonder if He has forgotten us or if our prayers have gone unheard.
Peter addresses that very struggle. He reminds believers that God's perspective on time is vastly different from our own. "With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." Peter is not giving us a mathematical formula. He is reminding us that God is not bound by time the way we are.
We live one day at a time. God sees the beginning and the end at once. What feels like a long delay to us is only a moment to Him. Then Peter offers an even deeper truth:
"The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise... but is patient toward you." What we often interpret as delay is actually an expression of God's patience.
God is never late.
He is giving people time to repent, to turn to Him, and to experience His saving grace.
His timing is always shaped by His mercy. That truth changes the way we view our own seasons of waiting.
Sometimes God delays because He is preparing us. Sometimes He delays because He is working in circumstances we cannot yet see. And sometimes He delays because His purposes are far greater than our immediate desires.
As a church, we may long for quick answers and clear direction. Yet even in seasons of transition, we can trust that God's timing is not careless or uncertain. He is patiently accomplishing His perfect will. T
The same is true in our personal lives. When the answer doesn't come as quickly as we hoped, we can choose to believe that God's wisdom exceeds our understanding. His delays are never empty. They are filled with purpose.
Today, remember this: God is never slow.
He is always right on time.
And His timing is always an expression of His perfect love, wisdom, and mercy.
Reflection Questions
- Where have you mistaken God's patience for God's absence?
- How does knowing that God's timing is shaped by His mercy change your perspective on waiting?
- What would it look like to trust God's wisdom instead of demanding your own timetable?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you that your timing is always perfect and your patience is an expression of your great love. Forgive us when we become impatient or question your faithfulness. Teach us to trust your wisdom, rest in your promises, and remember that you are always working for our good and your glory. Strengthen our faith as we wait on you. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
