Devotional: Wednesday, June 17 — Isaiah 40:9–11 (ESV)
Theme: The Tender Strength of God
"He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young."
— Isaiah 40:11
Isaiah 40 begins with a message God's people desperately needed to hear:
"Comfort, comfort my people, says your God." (Isaiah 40:1)
The people of Israel were living in exile. Jerusalem had been devastated. The future seemed uncertain, and many wondered if God had forgotten them.
Yet in the midst of their fear and disappointment, God does not merely offer instructions. He offers Himself.
Isaiah paints a remarkable picture of God's character. In the verses just before today's reading, God is described as the Creator of the heavens, the One whose power is beyond measure. He rules over nations, kings, and kingdoms. Nothing is beyond His authority.
Yet this same God is also described as a shepherd.
Not a distant ruler.
Not an indifferent king.
A shepherd.
Isaiah tells us that God gathers lambs in His arms, carries them close to His heart, and gently leads His flock.
What a beautiful image.
The God who holds the universe together also holds His people with tenderness.
Sometimes we assume strength and gentleness are opposites. We imagine that powerful leaders must be forceful and that compassionate leaders must somehow be weak.
But God's leadership reveals something different.
In God, strength and tenderness exist together.
His power protects.
His gentleness restores.
His authority comforts.
His presence gives peace.
This image of the shepherd is especially meaningful during seasons of uncertainty. When we cannot see the road ahead, we often look for signs of strength. We want assurance that someone is in control.
Isaiah reminds us that the One leading God's people is both mighty enough to govern the world and gentle enough to carry a lamb.
The same God who sustained Israel in exile continues to sustain His people today.
The same Shepherd who carried His flock through difficult seasons continues to carry us.
As we walk through our own seasons of change, may we remember that God's care is never harsh, hurried, or indifferent.
The Shepherd knows His sheep.
The Shepherd carries His sheep.
The Shepherd gently leads His sheep.
And He is leading us still.
