Christ Builds His Church
Scripture: Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As we begin Week 8: The Church Belongs to Christ, we anchor ourselves in one of the most hope-filled promises Jesus ever made. "I will build my church."
Notice whose Church it is.
Jesus doesn't say, "Your church."
He doesn't say, "The pastor's church."
He doesn't say, "The elders' church."
He says, "My church."
Those two words remind us that the Church has always belonged to Christ.
Throughout history, pastors have come and gone. Elders have completed their seasons of service. Congregations have experienced growth, decline, celebration, and hardship. Yet through every generation, the Church has endured—not because of human leadership, but because Jesus Himself has remained faithful.
He is both the foundation and the builder. That truth is especially comforting during seasons of transition. When leadership changes, it is natural to wonder what the future holds. Questions arise. Uncertainty can create anxiety. But Jesus calls us to lift our eyes above temporary circumstances and fix them on an eternal reality: He is still building His Church.
Notice that Jesus doesn't say He might build His Church. He doesn't say He hopes to build it. He declares with certainty, "I will build my church."
This is a promise, not a possibility. And then He adds another remarkable assurance: "The gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
In Scripture, gates symbolize strength and security. Yet Jesus proclaims that even the greatest powers of darkness cannot overcome what He is building. The Church has faced persecution, division, hardship, and uncertainty for over two thousand years.
Still, Christ has remained faithful.
Still, the gospel continues to be proclaimed.
Still, lives continue to be transformed.
Still, the Church stands.
Why?
Because its strength has never depended on human ability. Its strength rests entirely upon Jesus Christ. As members of His Church, our calling is not to carry the weight of sustaining it ourselves. That responsibility belongs to Christ.
Our calling is to remain faithful—to worship, to pray, to serve, to love one another, and to trust the One who has promised to build His Church.
Whatever this season holds, we can move forward with confidence because our future is secure in the hands of the One who gave His life for His Bride. The Church belongs to Him. And He never fails.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Church belongs to Jesus Christ. When we are tempted to become anxious about the future, remind us that You remain faithful in every generation. Help us to trust Your promises more than our fears and to remember that Christ alone is the foundation and builder of His Church. Strengthen our faith, unite us in love, and make us faithful servants as we participate in the work You are accomplishing. We place our hope not in human leaders but in our risen Savior, who has promised that nothing will overcome His Church. In Jesus' name, Amen.
