Devotional: Thursday, June 18 — John 10:11–14 (ESV)
Theme: The Shepherd Who Lays Down His Life
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
— John 10:11
This week we have been following the image of the shepherd through Scripture.
In Psalm 23, we met the Shepherd who guides and provides.
In Ezekiel 34, we encountered the Shepherd who seeks the lost and gathers the scattered.
In Isaiah 40, we saw the Shepherd who carries His flock with tenderness and care.
Today, Jesus reveals something even more remarkable.
He tells us that He is the Shepherd.
Not merely a messenger from God.
Not simply another teacher.
Not a shepherd among many.
The Good Shepherd.
Throughout the Old Testament, God's people longed for faithful leadership. They had experienced both good shepherds and bad ones. Some leaders cared for the flock. Others used the flock for their own benefit.
Jesus draws a sharp contrast between Himself and those who care only for themselves. He speaks of the hired hand who runs away when danger comes because the sheep do not truly belong to him.
But Jesus is different.
The sheep belong to Him.
He knows them.
He stays with them.
And ultimately, He lays down His life for them.
This is what makes Jesus the Good Shepherd.
His love is not merely sentimental. It is sacrificial.
His care is not based on convenience. It is rooted in covenant love.
He does not protect His flock from a distance. He enters into their suffering and bears the cost Himself.
When Jesus speaks these words in John 10, the cross is already on the horizon. He knows where His ministry is leading. He knows the sacrifice that awaits Him.
Yet He willingly continues.
The Shepherd becomes the Lamb.
The One who guides the flock gives His life for the flock.
That is the heart of the Gospel.
We are not saved because we found our way to God.
We are saved because the Good Shepherd came looking for us.
As followers of Christ, our confidence rests not simply in God's power or God's guidance, but in God's love demonstrated through Jesus Christ.
The Shepherd knows us.
The Shepherd calls us by name.
The Shepherd laid down His life for us.
And because He lives, we can trust Him with whatever lies ahead.

Lord Jesus, thank you for being the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and loves them completely. Thank you for laying down your life so that we might have life in you. Help us hear your voice, follow your leading, and rest in your unfailing love. Amen.
